Bath bombs have been enjoying a moment courtesy of social media, where users show off their brightly coloured bubbling baths and remind us why we love bath bombs so much. But what is a bath bomb?
A bath bomb is a solid mixture of fragrant oils and extracts that you drop into your bathwater before bathing. Its key ingredients include sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and citric acid, which are responsible for the captivating fizzing effect that bath bombs produce. They tend to be inactive when dry, but as soon as you toss the bath bomb into the water, the magic happens, and they react to form carbon dioxide and sodium citrate.
As the bath bomb dissolves in water, carbon dioxide bubbles are released, causing the bath bomb to break apart. During this process, the sodium citrate present in the bath bomb remains in the water to help the other ingredients to disperse and blend with your bathwater. Eventually, the bath bomb will fizzle away, leaving behind colour, fragrance and moisturising extracts.
Bath bombs were originally formulated as a luxury product for adults, but kids were understandably enthralled by the fizzing, bubbling and bright colours.
When we created Mini U way back in 2010, we knew that bath bombs would be on the menu. We wanted bright vibrant colours paired with maximum fizz. As parents, we knew we didn’t want anything that was going to permanently stain our bathroom either! The last thing we feel like doing after getting the kids bathed is donning our rubber gloves and scrubbing the bath.
At the time, it wasn’t easy to find bath bombs for sensitive skin in the UK. Children’s bath bombs needed to deliver the wow factor but without any harsh chemicals that could irritate their skin. We believe that bathtime fun should be for everyone, so everything we create is vegan, cruelty-free and free from gluten, soy and dairy – and fun!

Can I rub bath bombs on my skin?
Although our bath bombs are free from harsh chemicals, we don’t recommend putting them directly on your skin. Follow the instructions for the best results.
Can I wash my hair with bath bombs?
